FAQs

Common questions about bank routing numbers.

What is a bank routing number?

A routing number is a 9-digit code that identifies a specific bank or credit union in the US. It's used for ACH transfers, wire transfers, and direct deposits. Every bank has at least one, and larger banks have different routing numbers by region or account type. You can find your routing number on your checks (it's the first 9 digits on the bottom left), in your online banking portal, or by looking it up on this page.

Why do some banks have multiple routing numbers?

Large banks like Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo have different routing numbers for different states, account types, or transaction types (ACH vs. wire). If you're setting up ACH payments, make sure you're using the routing number for ACH transfers, not the wire transfer number. They're often different. You can look up the right one for your bank and state on this page.

What's the difference between a routing number for ACH and a routing number for wires?

ACH routing numbers and wire routing numbers are both 9 digits and issued by the ABA, but they route through different networks. ACH goes through the Automated Clearing House (batch processed, 2-3 business days). Wires go through Fedwire (real-time, same-day). Many banks use the same number for both, but some don't. If you send an ACH payment using a wire-only routing number, it'll get returned. Check with your bank or use the lookup on this page.
