Ask a contractor, a freight company or a distributor what slows their business down, and the answer is rarely the work itself. It's the money in between. A subcontractor finishes a job on Thursday and waits until the following week to get paid. A wire to a supplier costs more at the bank than the job is worth to rush. A customer won't save a card, so a recurring invoice turns into a monthly chase. A payment scheduled for a bank holiday quietly lands a day late.
None of these is a disaster on its own, but together they add up to a business that runs on the bank's calendar instead of its own.
Speed shouldn't be a luxury
For years, fast money has come with a catch.
- Same-day payments cost extra.
- Wires mean fees and a trip through a separate banking portal.
- Instant payouts are offered to the biggest customers, not the business paying ten vendors a week.
Speed tends to cost extra for two reasons. Urgent payments are easy to charge for, and fast payments leave less time to stop fraud. The result is that small businesses either pay to move fast or have to wait and absorb the cost in strained vendor relationships, late fees and hours spent following up.
We think that's backwards. The businesses that feel a three-day delay most are the ones with the least room for it. Moving money quickly should be the default. Doing it safely, with the right people approving the right payments, should come built in, not as an add-on that slows everything back down.
October's updates at Nickel are built on that idea. Get money where it needs to go, when it needs to be there, with control intact.
Pay vendors in minutes, not days
The biggest change this month is for businesses using Nickel Banking, the free business checking account built into the Nickel platform. When you pay vendors from a Nickel Banking account, they now get an instant payout that’s free to both you and them, whenever the vendor’s bank supports real-time payments. No expedite fee, no waiting for ACH to clear. For the subcontractor who needs to make payroll, that's the difference between getting paid today and getting paid next week.
When a vendor needs a wire, you can now send a same-day domestic wire transfer from your Nickel Banking account, straight from your Nickel dashboard. No separate bank login, no copying details between systems.
Getting paid on schedule, without the chase
Getting paid faster can often matter more than paying faster. Every day an invoice sits unpaid is a day the business covers payroll, materials and rent out of its own pocket. Many customers won't keep a card or bank account on file, which has made recurring billing a monthly follow-up for the businesses that serve them. Recurring invoices on Nickel can now go out as a payment link each cycle, so customers pay when the invoice arrives, even if they have no payment information stored. For those on automatic payments, it's safer. Nickel's automation stops automatically when a saved payment method is removed and responds to bank return codes.
Bill pay that works around the calendar
Small frictions across any team's most-used workflow add up fast. Payment dates in Nickel now skip weekends and bank holidays, and you get a heads-up before each holiday so nothing lands late by surprise. After payments go out, vendors get one receipt per batch instead of a pile, and if a vendor's bank details do change, the payment returns to you for approval.
Speed with the right controls
Faster payments only work if they're safe. If a vendor's bank details change, the payment comes back to you for approval, and Nickel Banking holds unexpected outside ACH pulls for you to review. It also only works if the right people are in control. Every Nickel user can now build custom user roles, each with its own settings for notifications, permissions and visibility. For example, a bookkeeper can now send invoices without being able to pay bills, firms can choose which of their staff can work on each client, and managers can send specific notifications to specific people.
