Nickel Bank Holiday Schedule 2026–2027: When Payments Settle
Every 2026 and 2027 bank holiday when ACH payments and wires on Nickel don't settle, how weekend holidays are observed, and how long each payment type takes.

Short answer: Nickel follows the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule. On the 11 Federal Reserve holidays, ACH payments and wires on Nickel don't settle. They settle on the next business day instead. Customers can still pay you by card, and payments sent from Nickel Balance can arrive in seconds over RTP or FedNow when the recipient's bank supports them.
Below are the 2026 and 2027 dates, the rules for holidays that fall on a weekend, and how long each payment type takes on Nickel. For how holidays delay ACH and wire transfers in general, and how to time invoices and vendor payments around them, see how bank holidays affect ACH payments and wire transfers.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend
The Federal Reserve has two rules for weekend holidays:
- Saturday holiday: the Federal Reserve stays open the Friday before. ACH payments and wires settle on that Friday as normal. In 2027, this applies to Juneteenth and Christmas. It also applies to New Year's Day 2028, which falls on Saturday, Jan 1. Friday, Dec 31, 2027, is a normal business day.
- Sunday holiday: the Federal Reserve closes the Monday after. In 2027, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, so nothing settles on Monday, Jul 5.
Some banks close their branches on the Friday before a Saturday holiday even though payments still settle. If you deposit checks in person, check your bank's branch hours.
Days that look like holidays but aren't
The day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve are not Federal Reserve holidays. ACH payments and wires settle on those days as normal. Some banks close early, and plenty of your customers and vendors will be out of the office, so plan for slower approvals even though the payment rails are open.
What runs on Nickel during a bank holiday
Your Nickel account is open every day. You can send invoices, approve bills, and schedule payments on a holiday. What changes is when the money moves:
- ACH payments: pause for the holiday. A payment in flight settles on the next business day, and the holiday doesn't count toward its settlement time.
- Wires: go out on the next business day. Fedwire, the Federal Reserve's wire system, is closed on bank holidays.
- Card payments: customers can pay your invoices by card on the holiday. The payout to your bank account moves on the next business day.
- Mailed checks: the Postal Service doesn't deliver on federal holidays, so a check mailed around a holiday takes at least a day longer.
- Nickel Balance: instant payments keep running. Payments you send from Nickel Balance arrive instantly over RTP or FedNow when the recipient's bank supports them, holidays included. When it doesn't, they go same day, which on a holiday means the next business day.
Nickel settlement times
Nickel moves money on the same business-day schedule as the rest of the banking system. Nickel is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services are provided by Grasshopper Bank, N.A., Member FDIC, and ACH payments and wires settle on Federal Reserve business days. Settlement times on Nickel count business days only, so a bank holiday never counts against them.
Here's how long payments take on Nickel, by plan:
| Payment type | Core | Plus and Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Receive ACH | 3 business days | 2 business days |
| Receive card | 2 business days | 1 business day |
| Pay by ACH | 3 business days | 2 business days |
| Pay by card | 2 business days | 1 business day |
| Mail a check | 3–7 business days | 3–7 business days |
ACH payments on Nickel are free on every plan, so sending a vendor payment a few days early around a holiday costs nothing extra. See Nickel's pricing for the full plan comparison.
To see when a specific payment will land, count business days forward from the day you send it, and skip weekends and the holidays above. For worked examples around Thanksgiving and year-end, see how bank holidays affect ACH payments and wire transfers.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nickel open on bank holidays?
Yes. You can log in, send invoices, and schedule payments any day of the year. ACH payments and wires settle on the next business day, and card payments are accepted every day.
What are the remaining bank holidays in 2026?
Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day (Mon, Oct 12), Veterans Day (Wed, Nov 11), Thanksgiving Day (Thu, Nov 26), and Christmas Day (Fri, Dec 25). The first bank holiday of 2027 is New Year's Day, on Friday, Jan 1.
Is the day after Thanksgiving a bank holiday?
No. The Federal Reserve is open on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so ACH payments and wires settle that day. Some banks run shorter branch hours.
Are banks closed on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?
No. Neither is a Federal Reserve holiday, so payments settle as normal. Some banks close branches early on those days.
What happens when a bank holiday falls on a Saturday?
The Federal Reserve stays open the Friday before, so payments settle that Friday as usual. In 2027, Juneteenth (Jun 19) and Christmas (Dec 25) both fall on a Saturday, and so does New Year's Day 2028.
Are Veterans Day and Columbus Day bank holidays?
Yes. The Federal Reserve is closed on both, so ACH payments and wires don't settle. The Postal Service is closed too. Many businesses stay open, which makes these two the holidays most likely to catch you off guard.
How many bank holidays are there in 2027?
The Federal Reserve observes 11 holidays in 2027. Juneteenth and Christmas fall on a Saturday, and Independence Day falls on a Sunday. So 8 holidays close the Federal Reserve on a weekday, plus Monday, Jul 5. That's 9 weekdays in 2027 when ACH payments and wires don't settle.
